GF Writing Prompt #54: Wretched Automatons

March 5, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hello listeners, readers, and writers! It’s time for our next Garage Fiction weekly prompt. Prompt #54 was provided by GF member Anthony. Our deadline for this submission is Friday, March 10th.

Anthony wants us to feast our eartubes on The Wretched Automatons.

Now, you might want to sit down for this next part. He’s about to thrown down some edumacation…

“This song is from a game called Nier, released in 2010 on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s about a man in a dying world who is trying to save his daughter from a terrible illness. He makes many strange friends along the way, such as a talking book and a foul-mouthed warrioress. The game has an absolutely wonderful soundtrack and the story itself is quite moving, I recommend it to anyone if they have the means to play it.

I chose this particular song because it’s one of my favorites in a soundtrack of pure gold, and it’s one I’ve drawn much inspiration from as I write my own work. But it’s also to celebrate the upcoming release of Nier’s sequel: Nier Automata, which is releasing March 10th in North America! It’s set over 1000 years after the first game, following an Android named 2B as she and her comrades are sent to reclaim the Earth from hostile machines. If you have a PS4, do check it out!”

Until next time, be wary around automatons. (Tip: They look like Arnold. All of them. Trust me.)

Good luck with your words. We’ll see you in the garage.

GF Writing Prompt #53: Too Serious?

February 26, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hello listeners, readers, and writers! It’s time for our next Garage Fiction weekly prompt. Prompt #53 was provided by GF member Senna. Our deadline for this submission is Friday, March 3rd.

Senna took one look at the group and sighed, her disappointment plain. When she spoke, it was with Heath Ledger’s voice, ‘Why so serious?’

(I’m not even kidding. I think she had the makeup on, too!)

As a remedy for all of the seriousness…seriosity?…serial-seriousli…ness?…she prescribed:

The French CanCan! Animation (by artist Kevin Gemin – aka Kekeflipnote)

“It is a funny video from an animator guy I like. And it just makes me happy. Sometimes it seems everyone is trying to write some sweeping drama. But remember that sadness and excitement aren’t the only things you can make people feel. There is a power in writing and art to be a little absurd, silly, cheeky… and bring a smile to people’s faces.”

Remember to unfurrow those brows and laugh a little. Or a lot. But not too much because straightjackets.

Until next time, good luck with your words. We’ll see you in the garage.
