GF Writing Prompt #58: Fallen

April 2, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hey listeners, readers, and writers. It’s time for another Garage Fiction weekly prompt. We skipped a couple weeks – because sometimes life likes to kick you in the front of the pants – but are back for prompt #58. Prompt #58 was submitted by GF Member, Dave, and our submissions for the group are due Friday, April 7th.

Dave wants us to give a listen to When We Fell, by David Bazan.

(I know exactly what you’re thinking but Dave isn’t David. Our Dave assuming “David” to disguise his identity from the group for a little stealth-promotion…well…that’d be a bit like Kal-el putting on eye glasses, wouldn’t it?)

Dave (not David) has also selected a passage from John Milton’s Paradise Lost to share:

‘O Goodness infinite, goodness immense

That all this good of evil shall produce,

And evil turn to good; more wonderful,

Than that which by creation first brought forth

Light out of darkness! Full of doubt I stand,

Whether I should repent me now of sin

By me done, or occasioned; or rejoice’

(Gustav Doré, “Him the Almighty Power / Hurled headlong flaming from the ethereal sky”)

Yup, our Dave has brain workings. I’m sure we can all agree that no one named “David” has ever proven to be that sagacious (what? I know big words). Of course, that doesn’t apply to David Bazan. We like him.

Until next time; be deep, think things with your thinker, and smash those words onto the page. We’ll see you in the garage.

GF Writing Prompt #55: Godzilla (2014)

March 12, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hello listeners, readers, and writers! It’s time for our next Garage Fiction weekly prompt. GF member Bryan has provided us with Prompt #55 – a still from the 2014 Godzilla movie. Our deadline for this submission is Friday, March 17th.

Bryan adds:

‘I’d seen the movie clip the still is from in a YouTube video for an epic music/movie score compilation. Something about this image resonated with me. I hadn’t even seen Godzilla, and didn’t know that’s where the clip was from. But, my god, just look at it…the balance, the colour composition…breathtaking. I’m all about creating moments, and the moment this captures speaks to me of worlds and lives and deaths, of powers far greater than ours, of Nature and Time, and the insignificance of Humanity…

I hope it resonates with you, too.’

Until next time, good luck with your words. We’ll see you in the garage.

GF Writing Prompt #54: Wretched Automatons

March 5, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hello listeners, readers, and writers! It’s time for our next Garage Fiction weekly prompt. Prompt #54 was provided by GF member Anthony. Our deadline for this submission is Friday, March 10th.

Anthony wants us to feast our eartubes on The Wretched Automatons.

Now, you might want to sit down for this next part. He’s about to thrown down some edumacation…

“This song is from a game called Nier, released in 2010 on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s about a man in a dying world who is trying to save his daughter from a terrible illness. He makes many strange friends along the way, such as a talking book and a foul-mouthed warrioress. The game has an absolutely wonderful soundtrack and the story itself is quite moving, I recommend it to anyone if they have the means to play it.

I chose this particular song because it’s one of my favorites in a soundtrack of pure gold, and it’s one I’ve drawn much inspiration from as I write my own work. But it’s also to celebrate the upcoming release of Nier’s sequel: Nier Automata, which is releasing March 10th in North America! It’s set over 1000 years after the first game, following an Android named 2B as she and her comrades are sent to reclaim the Earth from hostile machines. If you have a PS4, do check it out!”

Until next time, be wary around automatons. (Tip: They look like Arnold. All of them. Trust me.)

Good luck with your words. We’ll see you in the garage.

GF Writing Prompt #53: Too Serious?

February 26, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hello listeners, readers, and writers! It’s time for our next Garage Fiction weekly prompt. Prompt #53 was provided by GF member Senna. Our deadline for this submission is Friday, March 3rd.

Senna took one look at the group and sighed, her disappointment plain. When she spoke, it was with Heath Ledger’s voice, ‘Why so serious?’

(I’m not even kidding. I think she had the makeup on, too!)

As a remedy for all of the seriousness…seriosity?…serial-seriousli…ness?…she prescribed:

The French CanCan! Animation (by artist Kevin Gemin – aka Kekeflipnote)

“It is a funny video from an animator guy I like. And it just makes me happy. Sometimes it seems everyone is trying to write some sweeping drama. But remember that sadness and excitement aren’t the only things you can make people feel. There is a power in writing and art to be a little absurd, silly, cheeky… and bring a smile to people’s faces.”

Remember to unfurrow those brows and laugh a little. Or a lot. But not too much because straightjackets.

Until next time, good luck with your words. We’ll see you in the garage.

GF Writing Prompt #52: Bad Panda!

February 19, 2017 by Bryan Cheyne Leave a Comment

Hello listeners, readers, and writers! It’s time for our next Garage Fiction weekly prompt. Esteemed GF member Nicholas Brack has provided us with Prompt #52. Our deadline for this submission is Friday, February 24th.

The great and wise Mr. Brack has no words for us. No. Instead, he sends us forth into the creative abyss with nothing but silence and a stern-eyed glare (sooo stern-eyed).

What is it that waits for us there? (You so eagerly ask). The same thing that waits for anyone who journeys into the unknown, pen and paper in hand, with a mind to uncover the deepest truths of existence…

(Yup. Bad pandas.)

Interestingly enough (this is the get serious part, if it wasn’t obvious), this iconic image has been erroneously attributed to Banksy but it was actually created by French artist Julien D’Andon for Bad Panda Records.

Until next time pandas of the world, good luck with your words. We’ll see you in the garage.
